The Indian subsidiary of Japan’s Yokohama Rubber Co. has inaugurated new dormitory facilities at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), Atchutapuram, as part of its School Adoption Project in Visakhapatnam. The initiative is aimed at creating a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment for girl students, particularly those coming from remote and underserved communities.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Vijaya Krishnan, IAS, Collector and District Magistrate of Anakapalli, along with G. Appa Rao Naidu, District Education Officer, and senior representatives from Yokohama’s Atchutapuram manufacturing facility.

Under the latest phase of the programme, two new dormitories equipped with 120 bunk beds and mattresses have been established at the school. The residential facilities are designed to provide girl students with secure and comfortable accommodation, helping remove a key barrier to their continued education.

As part of the broader School Adoption Project, Yokohama has also undertaken several initiatives to improve the school’s overall learning environment. The company supported infrastructure upgrades, including repairs and refurbishment of classrooms as well as improvements in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, ensuring access to functional washrooms and clean drinking water.

To strengthen digital learning, the school has been equipped with K-YAN smart classroom technology, a multimedia projector system pre-loaded with the state board syllabus, enabling interactive and curriculum-aligned teaching. In addition, structured teacher training and student learning programmes have been introduced to enhance teaching methods and build academic confidence among students.

Through the School Adoption Project at KGBV Atchutapuram, Yokohama aims to ensure that its presence in the region contributes to meaningful community development and educational empowerment. The company plans to continue expanding the initiative through further academic support, vocational exposure and infrastructure improvements in the coming months.
