The Vizhinjam International Seaport has secured the final approval from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to commence export-import (EXIM) cargo operations, paving the way for the port’s transition from an exclusive transshipment hub to a full-fledged international gateway for cargo movement. EXIM operations are scheduled to begin on August 18.
The approval authorises the port to handle import and export cargo under the Customs Act. However, in the absence of a designated Container Freight Station (CFS), CBIC has prescribed specific operational conditions. Import cargo will initially be limited to Full Container Load (FCL) consignments eligible for Direct Port Delivery (DPD), with containers required to be transported directly from the terminal to the importer’s premises within 48 hours of landing. Export operations, meanwhile, will be restricted to factory-stuffed and self-sealed FCL containers.
Operated by Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd. (VISL), the deep-water port has so far functioned as an international transshipment terminal. The commencement of EXIM services will enable exporters and importers to route cargo directly through Vizhinjam, reducing dependence on foreign transshipment hubs and strengthening Kerala’s role in India’s maritime logistics network.
The customs clearance marks the final regulatory milestone ahead of the launch of gateway cargo services. With EXIM operations becoming operational next month, Vizhinjam is expected to significantly enhance cargo handling efficiency and support the growth of trade and logistics infrastructure along India’s southern coast.
