Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is planning an additional investment of around ₹7,000 crore in Tamil Nadu as part of its strategy to expand the scope of its Thoothukudi manufacturing facility and establish it as a comprehensive electric mobility production hub.

The proposed expansion will allow the company to diversify beyond electric passenger vehicles and enter new segments, including electric buses and electric two-wheelers, significantly broadening its manufacturing footprint in India.

VinFast’s Thoothukudi plant, inaugurated earlier as the company’s first manufacturing base outside Vietnam, currently has an initial annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles, with plans to scale up production as market demand grows.

To support the next phase of expansion, additional land has been earmarked adjacent to the existing facility. The enlarged campus is expected to house dedicated production lines for electric buses, e-scooters, component manufacturing, testing facilities, and supporting infrastructure.

The company views India as a strategic market in its global growth plans and sees the Thoothukudi facility as a key manufacturing and export base. Its proximity to port infrastructure is expected to support both domestic distribution and exports to international markets.

VinFast has already outlined a long-term investment roadmap of up to USD 2 billion (around ₹16,000 crore) for its India operations. The proposed ₹7,000 crore expansion forms a significant part of that broader commitment and reflects the company’s ambition to build a diversified electric mobility ecosystem in the country.

The expansion is expected to strengthen localisation efforts, deepen the supplier ecosystem, and increase manufacturing capabilities across multiple EV segments, positioning the Tamil Nadu facility as a major production centre for the company’s future operations in India and overseas markets.
