VA Tech WABAG, a leading Indian water-technology company, has secured a significant repeat order from the Melamchi Water Supply Development Board (MWSDB), Nepal, to build a 255 million litres per day (MLD) water-treatment facility in the Kathmandu Valley.
Funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the project involves a full design-build-operate (DBO) contract. The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) phase is slated to run for 36 months, after which WABAG will operate and maintain the plant for five years.
The new Sundarijal Water Treatment Plant will be constructed adjacent to WABAG’s existing facility in Kathmandu, which was commissioned in 2017. The plant will draw water from the Melamchi, Yangri, and Larke rivers, treating it to meet Nepal’s national drinking-water quality standards.
Arvind Dullu, Regional Business Head for South and Southeast Asia at WABAG, said the repeat order is a strong signal of the board’s faith in WABAG’s technical expertise and reliability. He added that the deal strengthens WABAG’s strategic presence in Nepal and reaffirms its leadership in the South Asian water-technology sector.
Following the announcement, WABAG’s share price rose by around 3%, underlining investor confidence in the company’s growing international footprint.
This award is a major milestone in Kathmandu’s efforts to bolster water security for its growing population. By expanding water-treatment capacity, the city can further safeguard the quality and reliability of its drinking-water supply.
