UltraTech Surpasses 2 GW of Green Energy Capacity for Captive Use

UltraTech Cement has crossed the 2 GW milestone in green energy capacity for captive use, taking its cumulative installed capacity to 2,024 MW. The company has become the first cement manufacturer in India to surpass this level, strengthening its focus on renewable power and waste heat recovery.

The latest capacity addition includes 116.55 MW of wind power from the company’s Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)-connected wind-solar hybrid project in Barmer, Rajasthan. UltraTech has also commissioned 10 MW of Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS) capacity at Sarlanagar Cement Works in Karnataka.

Following these additions, UltraTech’s total green energy portfolio comprises 1,580 MW of renewable energy capacity and 444 MW of WHRS capacity. Together, these sources currently meet around 48% of the company’s overall power requirements.

The company said nearly one-third of its 76 manufacturing units in India have maintained green energy utilisation above 50% of their electricity requirements so far in FY27. Five of these units have recorded green energy utilisation of more than 95%.

K C Jhanwar, Managing Director, UltraTech Cement, said crossing the 2 GW mark is the outcome of a strategy pursued consistently over the past decade, balancing reliability and growth while accelerating the shift towards green energy. He added that the higher use of green power would help reduce the company’s exposure to fossil fuel supply constraints and fluctuations in power prices.

The latest additions follow the commissioning of 430 MW of green energy capacity by UltraTech during FY26. The company is also progressively deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across its operations to support greater integration of renewable power and improve energy reliability.

UltraTech has not invested in new captive thermal power capacity for greenfield or brownfield expansions for more than a decade. The company has instead been increasing its renewable energy and WHRS portfolio as part of its broader decarbonisation strategy.

At the end of Q1 FY27, UltraTech had 1,897 MW of captive green energy capacity, comprising 1,463 MW of renewable energy and 434 MW of WHRS. The company had also reported a green power mix of 47% at the end of the quarter.

UltraTech is targeting an 85% share of green energy in its total power mix by 2030. As a member of the RE100 initiative, it has committed to meeting 100% of its electricity requirements through renewable energy by 2050.

The company’s latest milestone comes as it continues to expand the use of renewable energy, waste heat recovery and energy storage across its manufacturing network, with green power becoming a larger component of its overall electricity mix.
