Terratec Asia Pacific has announced the successful completion of a 9.1-kilometre tunnel for the Bangkok 9th Water Supply Project in Thailand, marking a significant milestone in the city’s long-term water infrastructure development.

The tunnel excavation was carried out using two Terratec tunnel boring machines (TBMs), which navigated challenging ground conditions to deliver the required alignment with precision and safety. The drive forms a key component of the Bangkok Metropolitan Waterworks Authority’s (BMWA) initiative to enhance the reliability and capacity of the water supply system in and around the Thai capital.

The completed tunnel will serve as a primary conduit for conveying raw water from major intake points to treatment facilities, ensuring improved distribution and greater resilience of the regional water network. Its alignment and design are intended to meet the needs of Bangkok’s growing population and urban demand.

Terratec’s TBMs were deployed with specialised cutter heads and ground support systems to handle varying soil conditions encountered along the tunnel’s path. Continuous monitoring and adaptive excavation strategies were employed to maintain safety standards and optimise progress throughout the tunnelling operation.

Project engineers highlighted the importance of rigorous planning and seamless coordination among stakeholders in achieving this milestone. The tunnel completion drew on detailed geotechnical assessments, advanced machine calibration and real-time operational oversight to ensure alignment with project specifications.

The success of the 9.1-kilometre drive demonstrates the capability of modern tunnel boring technology to deliver complex underground infrastructure, reinforcing Terratec’s reputation in large-scale tunnelling projects across Asia and beyond.

With the excavation phase now complete, subsequent works such as lining installation, mechanical and electrical systems fit-out and commissioning activities will proceed as part of the final project stages before the tunnel is integrated into the overall water supply network.
