In a major step toward promoting sustainable infrastructure and clean energy adoption, the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop solar power projects along the elevated stretch of Package-1 (Delhi section) of the Delhi–Saharanpur–Dehradun Highway (NH-709B) under Phase-1.
The agreement was formalized in the presence of Shri Harsh Malhotra, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road Transport & Highways; Shri V. Umashankar, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH); and Shri Sanjay Sharma, Director, SECI.
Under the partnership, SECI and NHAI will collaborate to install solar power plants on the highway infrastructure, utilizing available space along the elevated corridors to generate renewable energy. The initiative aims to power highway operations sustainably while contributing to India’s broader clean energy and decarbonization goals.
Speaking at the event, Minister Harsh Malhotra highlighted that the MoU reflects the government’s firm commitment to integrating green energy into infrastructure development. He said that the collaboration between SECI and NHAI will help transform India’s highways into energy-efficient corridors, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing the country’s renewable energy ambitions.
He further added that by harnessing solar energy along the highways, this project will not only produce clean electricity but also showcase how infrastructure and sustainability can go hand in hand. The Delhi–Dehradun Highway initiative is expected to serve as a model for similar projects across the national highway network.
Officials from both organizations stated that the project represents a new era of synergy between transport and energy sectors where highway infrastructure can become a platform for clean energy generation. The initiative supports India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and developing future-ready, eco-friendly infrastructure.
This partnership marks another milestone in the government’s mission to integrate renewable energy into public infrastructure, demonstrating how innovation and sustainability can together drive India toward a greener, more energy-secure future.
