SAIL and RITES Sign MoU to Enhance Logistics and Diesel Locomotive Operations

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES), a Navratna CPSE, to strengthen logistics capabilities and improve operational efficiency across SAIL’s plants and mining operations.

SAIL operates a dedicated internal rail network within its plant and mine premises to facilitate the movement of inbound raw materials, internal process transfers, and outbound finished products. The reliable maintenance and operation of its diesel locomotive fleet, supported by wet-leased locomotives, remains critical to sustaining day-to-day operations and supporting the company’s planned capacity expansion and long-term growth.

With Indian Railways increasingly transitioning toward electric traction, RITES continues to retain strong expertise in diesel locomotive operations and maintenance—an area that remains vital for SAIL’s internal logistics network. Leveraging access to Indian Railways’ infrastructure, spare parts, and a skilled technical workforce, RITES is well positioned to support SAIL in ensuring consistent performance and reliability of its diesel locomotive fleet.

The collaboration is expected to allow both organizations to concentrate on their core strengths, optimize operational costs, improve efficiency, and contribute toward lowering the overall carbon footprint of logistics operations.

The MoU was signed by Shri P. K. Baisakhiya, Executive Director (Operations), SAIL, and Shri Sandeep Jain, Executive Director (Technical Services), RITES, in the presence of senior officials from both organizations.
