Sabarmati High-Speed Rail Multimodal Hub Wins IGBC Green Certification

Sabarmati High-Speed Rail multimodal hub in Ahmedabad with metro, bullet train and BRTS integration, awarded IGBC green building certification
The Sabarmati multimodal hub in Ahmedabad earns IGBC green certification for sustainable design, integrating metro, high-speed rail, BRTS and rail services.

The Sabarmati High-Speed Rail multimodal hub in Ahmedabad has been awarded a coveted green building certification by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), marking a significant step in sustainable infrastructure development for India’s high-speed rail network.

Developed as part of the ongoing Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail project, the Sabarmati hub has been designed to bring together multiple transportation modes under one roof. It seamlessly links the existing Sabarmati railway station, the city’s metro system, the upcoming high-speed rail (bullet train) station, and the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), supported by travelator-equipped overbridges for smooth passenger movement across modes.

The facility’s green design features played an important role in earning the IGBC rating. These include rooftop solar installations, landscaped terrace areas, energy-efficient air conditioning and lighting systems, enhanced natural lighting and ventilation, rainwater harvesting and management, and waste segregation infrastructure. The hub also incorporates certified sustainable construction materials and other environmentally responsible architectural elements.

The structure itself is arranged as a twin complex that houses space for commercial activities, offices and passenger amenities such as lounges, retail outlets and food outlets on the third-floor concourse, aimed at improving traveler comfort and convenience.

Meanwhile, the broader 508-kilometre Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor is progressing rapidly, with significant milestones reached in viaduct and pier construction, bridge work, noise barrier installation, track formation, electrification, and tunnel excavation across Gujarat, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Maharashtra.

The IGBC recognition of the Sabarmati multimodal hub underscores the project’s commitment to environmental stewardship while advancing modern rail infrastructure in India.
