Proposed MMTS rail extension to Hyderabad Airport aims to improve connectivity and reduce road congestion.

Efforts to improve public transport connectivity to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad have gained fresh momentum, with renewed focus on extending the MMTS (Multi-Modal Transport System) rail line from Umdanagar station directly to the airport.

The proposed Hyderabad Airport rail link is expected to offer passengers and airport staff a faster, affordable, and reliable alternative to road-based transport, reducing reliance on cabs, private vehicles, and buses.

Currently, Umdanagar is the last MMTS stop on this route. Extending the rail line to RGIA has been under discussion for years, but recent reviews by the Telangana government and Indian Railways have revived hopes of implementation.

With passenger traffic at RGIA increasing rapidly, the MMTS airport link is projected to ease congestion on key approach roads, cut travel time, and strengthen Hyderabad’s urban mobility network.

If executed, the project will not only enhance last-mile connectivity to the airport but also make air travel more accessible and sustainable for the city’s growing population.
