Puducherry to Get 4 km Four-Lane Flyover and Major Road Expansion With Rs 437 Crore Central Support

Puducherry will construct a 4 km four-lane flyover and expand key roads with ₹437 crore central support to ease traffic congestion.

Puducherry is set to witness a major infrastructure upgrade with the construction of a four-kilometre four-lane flyover and extensive road widening projects, backed by Rs 437 crore in financial assistance from the Union government, Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan announced on Monday.

The projects were unveiled during the Republic Day celebrations, reflecting the administration’s focus on easing traffic congestion and strengthening urban connectivity in the coastal Union Territory.

As per the plan, the proposed flyover will run from Indira Gandhi Square to Rajiv Gandhi Square and Marapalam, forming a key elevated corridor through the city. In addition, a 13.5-kilometre four-lane road will be developed between Ariyankuppam and Mullodai, while several existing roads up to Marapalam will be widened to improve traffic flow and road capacity.

The flyover will connect major highways leading toward Chennai, Villupuram and Chidambaram, and is expected to significantly cut travel time while enhancing commuter safety. Once the projects are completed, traffic congestion within Puducherry town is projected to reduce by nearly 55 per cent.

Linking the infrastructure push to Puducherry’s tourism growth, the Lieutenant Governor said improved connectivity is essential as the region continues to attract domestic and international visitors. He noted that Puducherry ranks among the most preferred tourist destinations globally and that the administration is working on comprehensive plans to strengthen road, rail and air connectivity.

Beyond urban transport, the Puducherry administration is also planning to develop the Thirunallar Lord Dharbaranyeswarar temple in Karaikal into a global pilgrimage destination under the proposed Thirunallar Temple Town project, further reinforcing the region’s cultural and tourism infrastructure.

The combined road and flyover projects are expected to play a crucial role in improving mobility, boosting tourism and supporting long-term economic development in Puducherry.
