Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveils ₹3,200 crore national highway projects in West Bengal, strengthening Kolkata–Siliguri connectivity and boosting regional mobility.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on an official visit to West Bengal today, where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for two major National Highway projects with a combined investment of approximately ₹3,200 crore. The events are scheduled to take place in Ranaghat in Nadia district, with public functions expected this morning.

According to an official statement released by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the road projects include:
•4-laning of the Barajaguli–Krishnanagar section of NH-34 spanning about 66.7 km in Nadia.
•4-laning of the Barasat–Barajaguli section measuring around 17.6 km in North 24 Parganas.

These highway upgrades are expected to enhance connectivity between Kolkata and Siliguri, two of the state’s key economic corridors. Officials say the improved road network should reduce travel time by nearly two hours, offer smoother traffic movement, and lower vehicle operating costs for transporters and commuters alike. Enhanced connectivity is also projected to support regional commerce, tourism, and logistics across northern West Bengal.

In his advance social media message, Mr Modi highlighted his excitement about the visit and said he looked forward to meeting people in West Bengal for the inauguration and foundation ceremony.

The infrastructure drive comes as the state prepares for upcoming assembly elections, lending additional political significance to the visit. Mr Modi is also expected to address a public meeting in Nadia during the event.

These transport initiatives form part of the Central Government’s continued focus on expanding India’s national highway footprint and strengthening intra-state and inter-state road links that spur economic growth.
