Work begins on the Patna Water Metro project with construction of a charging station for electric ferries at Gandhi Ghat on the Ganga.

Work on the Patna Water Metro project has started with the construction of a charging station at Gandhi Ghat, marking an important step toward introducing electric ferry services on the Ganga. The charging infrastructure will support the operation of electric boats that will run under the proposed river-based transport system.

The charging facility being developed at Gandhi Ghat will power the vessels during operations, while additional charging stations are also planned at Kangan Ghat and Digha Ghat along the riverfront. These facilities will enable the electric ferries to recharge efficiently and ensure smooth functioning of the upcoming water transport service.

In the first phase, the water metro will operate on a 10.5-kilometre route along the Ganga. Gandhi Ghat and Gaighat are expected to serve as key stops in the initial stage of the service.

The project will initially run between Digha Ghat and Kangan Ghat, passing through several ghats and riverfront locations in Patna. Over time, the network is planned to expand with four routes and around ten terminals, improving connectivity along the river and linking nearby regions.

Future expansion plans include extending the service to Hajipur and Sonepur, which would allow the system to connect Patna with neighbouring districts and create a new river-based transport option for commuters.

The Patna Water Metro project is estimated to cost around ₹908 crore and is being implemented through a joint effort of the Bihar government and the Inland Waterways Authority of India. The initiative aims to provide a cleaner and alternative transport mode, reduce pressure on road traffic, and strengthen transport connectivity along the Ganga.

The vessels planned for the service include modern boats such as “MV Gomdhar Kunwar,” which is valued at more than ₹12 crore. These boats are designed to operate using advanced technology while ensuring passenger comfort and safety during river travel.
