Oriental Rail Infrastructure Ltd has entered into a strategic collaboration with VNICTT, the research and development arm of United Wagon Company (UWC), to develop a new generation of freight rolling stock designed for a 25-tonne axle load.
The partnership will focus on developing a 25-tonne axle-load bogie and a solid-bottom gondola car, aimed at supporting higher-capacity and more efficient freight transportation. The collaboration brings together Oriental Rail Infrastructure’s manufacturing capabilities and VNICTT’s expertise in freight wagon and bogie design.
The proposed bogie is being developed to meet the requirements of higher axle-load freight operations. Increasing axle load allows wagons to carry greater payloads, helping improve the productivity of freight transportation on routes equipped to handle the additional loading.
The solid-bottom gondola car will form another key part of the collaboration. Such wagons are designed for bulk cargo transportation and can support the movement of commodities requiring robust, high-capacity freight equipment.
For Oriental Rail Infrastructure, the agreement expands its product development portfolio in the freight rolling stock segment. The company, through its wholly owned subsidiary Oriental Foundry Private Limited, manufactures railway wagons, bogies, couplers and other heavy engineering components. Its manufacturing facilities in Gujarat are approved by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).
The company has been expanding its capabilities in freight rolling stock, including wagon manufacturing and bogie production. The latest collaboration is expected to strengthen its ability to develop and offer higher-capacity freight solutions for the railway sector.
The 25-tonne axle-load platform is also aligned with the broader push towards increasing freight carrying capacity and improving the efficiency of railway transportation. Indian Railways has provisions for 25-tonne axle-load wagons on selected routes, particularly where infrastructure is capable of supporting higher axle loads.
The collaboration with VNICTT will therefore give Oriental Rail Infrastructure access to additional technical expertise in the development of high-capacity freight rolling stock, while supporting the company’s plans to expand its presence in India’s railway freight equipment market.
