Network Planning Group reviews rail and highway projects under PM GatiShakti for multimodal connectivity
NPG evaluates key railway and highway proposals to strengthen multimodal connectivity under PM GatiShakti.

The Network Planning Group (NPG) held its 102nd review meeting to examine three major transport infrastructure proposals aimed at strengthening multimodal connectivity under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan. The session focused on two railway projects and one highway development, all designed to improve integrated logistics, last-mile access and coordinated execution across key regions.

One of the major projects evaluated was the proposed third and fourth railway line between Punarakh and Kiul in Bihar, covering nearly 49.57 km. The corridor passes through important industrial and agricultural zones in Patna and Lakhisarai districts and is expected to enhance the movement of goods for industries such as cement manufacturing, power generation, petroleum, marble processing, automotive fabrication and textiles. Officials also noted that improved connectivity along this stretch could boost tourism by providing better access to historical and cultural landmarks in and around Patna.

The NPG also reviewed a proposed 27.50 km broad-gauge railway line between Silghat and Dekargaon in Assam. Strategically aligned near NH-15 and NH-715, the project is intended to complement existing road networks and expand transport capacity across the northeastern region. The new line is projected to strengthen regional accessibility and support freight as well as passenger movement in the long term.

In addition to the rail proposals, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways presented a plan for a four-lane elevated corridor on NH-65 at Solapur in Maharashtra. The 9.66 km project, developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, includes approach roads and service lanes aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving road safety in the urban stretch. The corridor is expected to reduce bottlenecks, shorten travel times and support local economic activity and tourism in and around Solapur.

The meeting was chaired by the Joint Secretary, Logistics, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, who emphasised the importance of aligning such projects with the core principles of PM GatiShakti to ensure smoother implementation and nationwide connectivity improvements.
