National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Steel, has inaugurated its Sydney office in Australia to strengthen its international presence and expand engagement with the country’s mining and critical minerals sector.

The new office comes amid India’s efforts to secure reliable supplies of critical minerals and explore overseas mining opportunities to support industrial growth, manufacturing and clean energy technologies.

Australia is an important partner for India in the minerals sector, offering substantial mineral reserves, established mining capabilities and expertise in mineral processing. NMDC’s presence in Sydney is expected to facilitate closer engagement with Australian mining companies, government agencies and industry stakeholders, opening avenues for investment, technology collaboration and resource development.

The office inauguration coincides with Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy’s visit to Australia from October 25 to 30. His programme includes meetings with Australian government representatives, mining companies and research institutions to explore opportunities across mineral exploration, extraction, processing and the development of value-added products.

The minister is also scheduled to participate in the International Mining and Resources Conference and Expo (IMARC) 2026 in Sydney, where discussions will focus on investment and partnerships across the mining value chain. The visit includes a meeting with Madeleine King, Australia’s Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, and engagements with major Australian mining companies.

Critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earth elements are increasingly important for electric vehicles, battery manufacturing, renewable energy systems and advanced industrial applications. Strengthening access to these resources is a key priority as India works to diversify supply chains and reduce vulnerabilities associated with overseas mineral dependence.

NMDC’s Sydney presence adds an international dimension to its mining operations and aligns with India’s wider efforts to deepen cooperation with resource-rich countries. The extent of investment or specific projects that may emerge from the new office has not yet been publicly detailed.
