Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, highlighted India’s growing shift towards cleaner fuels and safer roads while addressing the 84th Annual Session of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) in Bhubaneswar.
The minister said India is steadily moving from being a fuel-importing nation to a fuel-exporting one through the large-scale production and use of ethanol, methanol, bio-LNG, CNG, and green hydrogen. This transformation, he emphasized, is not only reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels but also paving the way for a sustainable transport ecosystem.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to road safety and sustainable infrastructure, Shri Gadkari spoke about the integration of modern engineering practices, intelligent transport systems, and nationwide safety awareness programmes. These efforts, he noted, are aimed at building a more efficient and secure mobility network for the future.
He also urged road engineers to ensure precision and quality in Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) to facilitate smooth and safe highway construction. Gadkari underlined that innovative materials like bio-bitumen and recycled plastic waste are being increasingly used in road construction to enhance durability, cut costs, and support eco-friendly development.
Concluding his address, the minister reiterated that the government’s mission is to create world-class, innovative, and sustainable road infrastructure that fuels economic growth, generates employment, and strengthens India’s journey toward self-reliance and resilience.
