Nitin Gadkari Reviews Quality and Maintenance of 12,260 km National Highway Projects in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh

Nitin Gadkari has reviewed the quality, maintenance, and progress of National Highway projects covering approximately 12,260 kilometres in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen highway infrastructure and ensure long-term asset performance.

The review meeting focused on the construction quality, maintenance standards, operational efficiency, and overall progress of highway projects being executed across the two states under various national highway development programmes.

According to officials, the assessment covered both completed and under-construction highway stretches, with emphasis on ensuring adherence to prescribed engineering standards, safety requirements, and maintenance obligations.

Gadkari stressed the importance of maintaining high construction quality and timely upkeep of national highway assets to enhance road safety, improve user experience, and maximise the lifespan of infrastructure investments.

Officials also reviewed the status of ongoing highway expansion, widening, rehabilitation, and maintenance works across key corridors in both states. Discussions included measures to address project bottlenecks, accelerate execution timelines, and improve operational performance.

The Ministry has been conducting periodic reviews of National Highway projects across the country to monitor quality standards and ensure effective implementation of maintenance mechanisms after project completion.

According to officials, special attention was given to road safety measures, pavement conditions, bridge maintenance, drainage systems, signage, and other critical infrastructure components that directly impact highway performance and commuter safety.

The review forms part of the government’s broader strategy to improve the quality and durability of highway infrastructure while strengthening accountability among project developers, contractors, consultants, and concessionaires.

West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh are witnessing substantial investments in highway development through new greenfield corridors, economic corridors, expressways, port connectivity roads, and capacity augmentation projects aimed at improving regional and national connectivity.

Officials noted that the focus on quality assurance and preventive maintenance is essential as India’s National Highway network continues to expand rapidly to meet growing transportation and logistics demands.

Industry experts believe regular project reviews and stricter quality monitoring will help improve asset longevity, reduce maintenance costs, enhance road safety, and ensure better returns on infrastructure investments.

The review underscores the government’s continued emphasis on building world-class road infrastructure while maintaining high standards of quality, sustainability, and operational efficiency across the National Highway network.
