The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued notices to multiple authorities over alleged unauthorised construction activity in a designated green belt area in Rohini, northwest Delhi. The tribunal has sought responses from concerned civic and regulatory bodies, including pollution control and urban planning agencies, regarding the reported violations.

The action follows a complaint alleging that construction work was being carried out within a protected green zone in Sector 16, Rohini, in violation of land-use regulations. The complaint was supported by visual evidence indicating ongoing development activity in an area earmarked exclusively for green cover and environmental preservation.

In its order, the NGT directed the authorities to ensure strict adherence to the applicable master plan provisions and environmental protection laws. The tribunal instructed officials to take immediate preventive steps to halt any illegal activity and initiate appropriate action against those responsible. A detailed status report outlining the measures taken has been sought within a stipulated timeframe.

The tribunal reiterated that green belt areas are protected zones where construction and land-use changes are prohibited, except under legally permitted circumstances. It emphasised that encroachments in such areas undermine environmental sustainability and defeat the purpose of urban planning norms aimed at maintaining ecological balance.

The intervention is seen as part of broader efforts by environmental regulators to curb unauthorised development and safeguard green spaces within rapidly urbanising regions of the national capital.
