Mumbai Port Handles 1,452 MT Heavy Cargo Through Specialised Roll-Off Operation

Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) has handled three exceptionally heavy over-dimensional cargo (ODC) packages with a combined weight of 1,452 metric tonnes through a specialised Roll-Off operation.

The cargo formed part of a coastal consignment transported by barge from Dahej, Gujarat, to Mumbai Port for onward export to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), UAE.

The three packages comprised a PG Cooler weighing 718 MT, a Riser and Downcomer weighing 502 MT and a Steam Drum weighing 232 MT. Due to their exceptional size and weight, the cargo could not be discharged using conventional methods involving ship’s gear or shore cranes.

Mumbai Port Authority adopted a specialised Barge Roll-Off method to facilitate the safe transfer. The barge was berthed perpendicular to the berth, with its deck aligned to the level of the wharf. Hydraulic puller trailers were then moved onto the barge and positioned beneath the packages.

The hydraulic trailers took the load of the packages and carefully rolled them from the barge onto the wharf. The operation required precise alignment and stable conditions because of the exceptional weight and dimensions of the cargo.

The availability of a berth inside Mumbai Port’s lock gate was an important factor in carrying out the operation. The relatively calm water conditions within the lock gate provided the stability needed to maintain alignment between the barge and the quay during the transfer.

The cargo will be stored at Mumbai Port until an onward vessel becomes available for shipment to Abu Dhabi. The movement combines coastal shipping, specialised port handling, storage and international maritime connectivity for a large industrial consignment.

The operation also demonstrates Mumbai Port’s capability to handle complex heavy-lift and project cargo that cannot be accommodated through conventional cargo-handling methods. It supports the movement of Indian-manufactured industrial equipment from domestic production centres to international markets.

The successful handling of the consignment adds to Mumbai Port’s project-cargo capabilities, particularly for large and heavy industrial equipment requiring specialised transfer, storage and onward shipping arrangements.
