Mormugao Port Secures 20-Year Authorisation for Private 5G Network

Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) in Goa has become the first major port in India to secure authorisation for a private 5G network, paving the way for digital upgrades across cargo handling, logistics and port security.

The Department of Telecommunications granted the port Captive Non-Public Network (CNPN) authorisation in September 2026 under the Telecommunications Act, 2023. The authorisation is valid for 20 years. MPA is also the first government autonomous body in the country to receive this approval.

The proposed network is expected to provide high-speed connectivity, low-latency communication and greater control over operational data within the port premises. According to MPA Chairperson N. Vinodkumar, the dedicated network will help reduce reliance on commercial cellular services and strengthen the security of sensitive logistics information and critical port processes.

MPA is exploring applications across smart port operations, automated logistics and cargo tracking. Potential uses include real-time monitoring of port activities and assets, drone-based surveillance, smart sensors and digital systems for managing port infrastructure.

The port authority has appointed a consultancy agency to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and issued a Request for Information (RFI) to identify suitable system integrators and original equipment manufacturers. Proof-of-concept trials are also underway to assess the technology and its potential applications.

The network is expected to support connected devices and digital systems across the port, improving visibility of operations and coordination between different activities. Its deployment will progress through the planning and trial stages before implementation.

The initiative aligns with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ focus on digitisation and operational efficiency across India’s maritime sector. Mormugao’s project could also provide a reference for other major ports considering dedicated 5G infrastructure for logistics, surveillance and industrial operations.
