Mizoram is witnessing exceptionally strong passenger demand following the expansion of its railway network to Sairang, with some train services reporting occupancy levels exceeding 150 percent. The surge in ridership highlights the growing importance of rail connectivity in the northeastern state after it was linked more directly with the national rail network.
Railway officials noted that the Sairang–Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express has recorded occupancy levels of around 147 percent in one direction and about 154 percent in the other, indicating demand well beyond available seating capacity. Other services such as the Sairang–Guwahati Express and the Sairang–Kolkata Express have also reported occupancy levels above 100 percent, reflecting strong public response to the new rail connectivity.
The development follows the completion of the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line, which has connected Mizoram’s capital region to the broader Indian railway network for the first time. The line links Bairabi near the Assam border to Sairang, located close to Aizawl, significantly improving passenger mobility and reducing travel time between the state and other parts of the country.
The project has been considered a major engineering achievement due to the difficult terrain of the region. The railway alignment includes numerous tunnels and bridges across steep hills and deep valleys, enabling rail access to an area that previously depended largely on road transport.
The new rail link is expected to bring wide-ranging benefits for Mizoram by improving connectivity for passengers, boosting tourism, and facilitating the movement of goods and agricultural produce to markets in neighbouring states and across the country.
With the introduction of long-distance trains connecting Sairang to major cities such as Delhi, Guwahati and Kolkata, the railway network is rapidly emerging as a critical transport backbone for the state, signalling a new phase of infrastructure-driven growth in Mizoram.
