Maharashtra Unveils Strategic Infrastructure Push Including Mumbai–Hyderabad Expressway, Metro Network Expansion and New Nagpur Business District

Maharashtra infrastructure development featuring Mumbai–Hyderabad expressway proposal, Mumbai Metro network expansion, and new Nagpur central business district
Maharashtra announces a strategic infrastructure drive covering a new Mumbai–Hyderabad expressway, large-scale Mumbai Metro expansion, and the development of a new business district in Nagpur to boost connectivity and economic growth.

The Government of Maharashtra has unveiled a major infrastructure development initiative aimed at transforming connectivity, urban mobility and economic growth across the state. The announcement comes as part of the winter session of the state legislature, with key projects highlighted in road, urban transit, and commercial real estate.

Mumbai–Hyderabad Expressway Proposal:
A new access-controlled expressway linking Mumbai and Hyderabad has been announced, with plans to cut the distance significantly and improve travel efficiency across the two major cities. The corridor often referred to in strategic discussions as the Jankalyan Expressway is expected to reduce travel distances from the current approximately 707–717 km to roughly 530 km and shorten travel times across key junctions.

Metro Expansion Across the Mumbai Region:
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a comprehensive expansion of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) Metro network, more than quadrupling its current size. The network is planned to increase from about 91 km today to around 374 km in successive phases. The expansion will enhance east-west and north-south connectivity within Mumbai and its suburbs, bolstering public transport capacity and reducing congestion on city roads.

New Business District in Nagpur:
In addition to transport infrastructure, the state government has outlined plans for a new central business district (CBD) near Nagpur, aimed at positioning the region as a commercial and financial hub. This initiative forms part of the broader “New Nagpur” development vision, designed to attract investment, create jobs, and expand urban amenities. The district is expected to house corporate offices, financial services, mixed-use developments, and infrastructure that supports trade and industry.

Focus on Connectivity and Growth:
These announcements are part of a wider agenda that seeks to boost inter-city connectivity and economic integration across Maharashtra. Complementing the new expressway and metro plans, the state continues to progress on major highways and expressway projects already underway, including the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg, which has been fully operational since mid-2025 and significantly cut travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur.

Officials say that the combined infrastructure push will not only improve transport efficiency but also support urbanisation, industrial expansion, and regional development particularly in central and eastern parts of the state such as Vidarbha and Marathwada.

The government’s policy emphasis on long-term infrastructure investment reflects Maharashtra’s drive to stay competitive, attract business, and strengthen its position as one of India’s most economically dynamic states.
