Maharashtra Clears ₹1,722 Crore Connector Linking Versova-Bandra Sea Link with Savarkar Sea Bridge

The Maharashtra Cabinet’s Infrastructure Sub-Committee has approved a ₹1,722.40 crore project to construct a 3.55-km connector linking the Bandra Fort end of the under-construction Versova-Bandra Sea Link (VBSL) with the Savarkar Sea Bridge, paving the way for seamless road connectivity between Mumbai’s western suburbs and South Mumbai.

The connector has been designed to eliminate a key missing link in Mumbai’s western coastal road network. Once completed, motorists travelling from Versova, Andheri and the western suburbs will be able to access South Mumbai through a continuous high-speed corridor comprising the Versova-Bandra Sea Link, the new connector and the Savarkar Sea Bridge. According to officials, the project is expected to reduce travel time from Worli to Fort to just 5–10 minutes, while the journey between Versova and Fort could come down to 15–20 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

The project received approval after being examined by the Committee of Secretaries earlier this month. Besides civil construction, the sanctioned cost includes provisions for rehabilitation of affected hutment residents and fishermen, environmental protection measures and other statutory compliance requirements associated with the coastal infrastructure project.

The connector forms an integral part of the broader Versova-Bandra Sea Link, a 17.17-km coastal bridge being developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) as part of Mumbai’s Western Coastal Road network. Once operational, the sea link and its connecting infrastructure are expected to decongest arterial roads such as the Western Express Highway and SV Road while improving east-west mobility across the city.

The approval marks another milestone in Maharashtra’s ongoing programme to expand Mumbai’s transport infrastructure through sea links, coastal roads and high-capacity corridors aimed at supporting rising traffic demand and strengthening urban connectivity across the metropolitan region.
