Maharashtra Approves Development Plan Revisions for Versova–Dahisar Coastal Road Corridor

The Maharashtra Government has approved amendments to Mumbai’s Development Plan (DP)-2034, clearing a major planning hurdle for the proposed Versova–Dahisar Coastal Road corridor. The decision will facilitate land acquisition and pave the way for the execution of one of the city’s key north-bound coastal connectivity projects.

The approved revisions incorporate the alignment of the proposed coastal road and its associated connectors into the city’s statutory development plan. The project comprises a 22.03-km corridor, including a 17.57-km coastal stretch from Versova to the Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR) connector and a 4.46-km GMLR connector. The revised DP also includes an 11.37-km coastal road section between the GMLR connector and Dahisar, along with 3.54 km of interchanges and connecting roads.

As part of the approval, the government has also sanctioned changes to existing land reservations and removed the earlier proposed alignment between the GMLR connector and Valnai Metro station, enabling a more efficient route for the project. The revisions follow the completion of the statutory process by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which had invited public objections and suggestions before forwarding the proposal to the state government.

The Versova–Dahisar Coastal Road will be executed in six phases, covering stretches from Versova to Bangur Nagar, Bangur Nagar to Mindspace with the GMLR connection, Mindspace to the Charkop tunnels, Charkop to Gorai, and finally Gorai to Dahisar. Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly improve north-south connectivity across Mumbai’s western suburbs, provide seamless integration with the Goregaon–Mulund Link Road and the proposed Dahisar–Bhayandar Elevated Road, and ease traffic congestion on existing arterial routes.

The project forms part of Mumbai’s broader coastal road expansion programme aimed at strengthening urban mobility through high-capacity road infrastructure while improving connectivity between the city’s northern suburbs and South Mumbai. With the DP-2034 revisions now approved, authorities are expected to expedite land acquisition and move forward with subsequent stages of project implementation.
