Madhya Pradesh Completes Over 3.62 Lakh Water Conservation Works Under Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan

Madhya Pradesh has completed more than 3.62 lakh water conservation works under the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan, marking the successful conclusion of the statewide campaign aimed at strengthening water security, groundwater recharge, and the revival of traditional water bodies. The large-scale initiative has emerged as one of the state’s most extensive community-driven water conservation programmes.

Launched on March 19, 2026, the 100-day campaign focused on the restoration and rejuvenation of rivers, ponds, lakes, wells, stepwells, check dams, and other water harvesting structures across both rural and urban areas. The programme also included desilting, watershed development, afforestation, and measures to improve groundwater recharge ahead of the monsoon season.

According to the state government, the campaign exceeded its original target by completing over 3.62 lakh water conservation works, with active participation from local communities, government departments, urban local bodies, and panchayats. The initiative involved an estimated investment of around ₹10,000 crore, making it one of the largest water conservation efforts undertaken in the state.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said water conservation has become a people’s movement in Madhya Pradesh and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preserving every drop of water. He noted that the campaign has not only strengthened water resources but has also contributed to improving agricultural sustainability, groundwater availability, and climate resilience across the state.

The Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan has also drawn international attention for its community-led approach to sustainable water management. Representatives from several countries have praised the initiative as a replicable model for addressing water scarcity and enhancing environmental conservation through public participation.

The successful completion of the campaign, the Madhya Pradesh government plans to continue strengthening water infrastructure and promote long-term conservation measures to ensure sustainable water availability while improving resilience against future climate and water-related challenges.
