Lila Global Completes Historic Acquisition of India’s First VLCC Structured Through GIFT City

Lila Global acquires Very Large Crude Carrier through GIFT City maritime financing framework in India
Lila Global finalizes acquisition of a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) using GIFT City’s international financial services framework.

Lila Global has completed the historic acquisition of a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) through a financial structure based in Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), marking the first such transaction for an India-linked oil supertanker using the International Financial Services Centre framework.

The deal represents a significant milestone for India’s maritime financing ecosystem, demonstrating how GIFT City’s ship-leasing and offshore finance framework can be used to structure large global shipping transactions. The transaction highlights the growing role of the financial hub in facilitating complex maritime asset financing.

A VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) is among the largest oil tankers used in global shipping and is capable of transporting around two million barrels of crude oil per voyage, making it a crucial asset in international energy trade. Such vessels are typically used on long-haul routes between major oil-producing regions and large energy-importing markets.

The acquisition also underscores the expanding presence of Lila Global in the tanker segment, as the company continues to grow its fleet across crude and product tanker markets as part of a broader global shipping strategy. The firm has been actively strengthening its position in the tanker industry through targeted vessel acquisitions and strategic partnerships.

Industry observers note that structuring a VLCC acquisition through GIFT City could pave the way for more ship leasing and maritime financing transactions to be routed through India, positioning the country as a competitive hub for global shipping finance.

The development aligns with India’s broader ambition to build a strong maritime services ecosystem within GIFT City, enabling ship leasing, offshore financing and maritime asset management under a globally competitive regulatory framework.
