Kavach Gets UBS Upgrade as Deployment Crosses 3,100 Km on Indian Railways

Kavach train protection system with Universal Braking System upgrade improving railway safety across Indian Railways network
Kavach upgraded with UBS as deployment expands across Indian Railways network.

India’s indigenous train safety system Kavach train protection system has received a significant technological upgrade with the introduction of a Universal Braking System (UBS), aimed at standardising braking performance across different rolling stock and improving system interoperability.

The UBS upgrade addresses a key operational challenge variations in braking response across locomotives and train configurations by creating a more uniform and predictable braking mechanism under the Kavach framework. This enhancement is expected to improve the system’s overall reliability, safety precision, and compatibility across multiple train types.

The development comes as Kavach deployment continues to scale across the national rail network. The system has now been installed over 3,103 route kilometres, with work currently underway on an additional 24,427 km, covering high-density and critical corridors.

Kavach, developed indigenously by Indian Railways, functions as an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to prevent collisions by automatically applying brakes when required, including in situations such as signal passed at danger (SPAD) or overspeeding.

The addition of UBS marks an important evolution in the system’s architecture, particularly as deployment expands to diverse operational environments and rolling stock configurations. By ensuring consistent braking behaviour, the upgrade strengthens Kavach’s capability to function seamlessly across the network at scale.

The Railways’ ongoing push to accelerate Kavach rollout, combined with such technical upgrades, reflects a broader effort to modernise signalling systems, enhance operational safety, and move toward a more automated and fail-safe railway network.
