India’s fastest metro rail system is scheduled to begin operations on March 8, 2026, with the launch of the Meerut Metro corridor capable of running trains at a top operational speed of 120 kmph, officials said on Saturday.

The new metro service, developed under the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) initiative, will connect several key nodes across Meerut, significantly reducing travel time for commuters in one of the rapidly growing urban regions of Uttar Pradesh.

Officials said the metro’s high-speed design incorporating advanced track, signalling and rolling stock technologies will enable swift intercity and suburban connectivity, bridging longer distances faster than conventional urban metro systems in the country.

The upcoming launch focuses on the first operational stretch, offering commuters a modern, efficient and comfortable mass rapid transit option. Once fully commissioned, the system is expected to provide seamless connectivity between major residential, commercial and industrial areas of Meerut and nearby regions.

This development marks a milestone in the expansion of modern rail infrastructure in India’s urban landscape, aligning with broader goals to enhance public transport, reduce traffic congestion and improve last-mile connectivity. The operationalisation of a metro capable of achieving speeds of up to 120 kmph notably higher than typical metropolitan services highlights progress in adopting advanced rail technologies in regional transit networks.

The high-speed metro corridor is expected to attract significant commuter patronage, supporting economic activity and urban mobility in one of the populous districts of Uttar Pradesh. Authorities said that additional phases of the Meerut Metro project, including extensions and new stations, will be rolled out in a phased manner to expand coverage and accessibility.

Commuters are being advised to check local schedules and launch day instructions prior to travel, as authorities prepare to commence commercial services from March 8.
