In a major push to modernise passenger infrastructure, Indian Railways is planning to develop mega coaching terminals in 20 key cities across the country, according to recent reports. The initiative aims to decongest existing railway stations, enhance operational efficiency, and offer world-class amenities to passengers.
The proposed terminals will function as modern hubs for train maintenance, passenger handling, and turnaround operations, easing pressure on overburdened city stations such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad. Each terminal will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including advanced stabling lines, automatic coach washing plants, and upgraded maintenance yards.
Officials have stated that the move will not only improve punctuality but also enable the introduction of more long-distance and premium trains. The terminals will be designed with passenger convenience in mind, featuring better waiting areas, digital information systems, and multi-modal connectivity for smooth access.
The Railway Board is working with zonal divisions to identify suitable land parcels and investment models, including public-private partnerships (PPP), to ensure the timely execution of the project.
According to sources, the plan aligns with Indian Railways’ broader “Vision 2047” roadmap, which focuses on enhancing safety, efficiency, and passenger comfort while reducing operational bottlenecks.
Once completed, these mega terminals are expected to transform the travel experience for millions of passengers, creating a more seamless, modern, and efficient railway ecosystem across India.
