Indian Railways delivered a robust operational performance in July 2026, recording a 9% year-on-year increase in freight loading while carrying more than 63.35 crore passengers, reflecting sustained momentum in both cargo movement and passenger services. The strong performance highlights growing demand across key sectors of the economy and continued improvements in railway operations.
During the month, the national transporter handled 141.3 million tonnes (MT) of freight, up from 129.7 MT in July 2025. Freight earnings also registered healthy growth, supported by higher transportation of essential commodities such as coal, iron ore, cement, fertilisers, foodgrains and containers. The Ministry of Railways attributed the increase to improved logistics efficiency, higher asset utilisation and sustained industrial demand.
Passenger mobility also witnessed a notable rise, with over 63.35 crore passengers travelling on the railway network during July. The increase was driven by strong demand across suburban, long-distance and regional services, reinforcing Indian Railways’ role as the country’s primary mode of mass transportation.
The twin growth in freight and passenger traffic underscores the continued strengthening of Indian Railways’ operational capabilities. Ongoing investments in network expansion, infrastructure modernisation, capacity augmentation and technology-driven operational improvements are expected to further enhance efficiency, improve service reliability and support the country’s expanding economic and logistics requirements.
