Indian Railways Approves ₹341 Crore for Kavach Safety System Expansion in Ambala and Ahmedabad

Indian Railways has sanctioned two Kavach-related projects worth approximately ₹341 crore for the Ambala and Ahmedabad divisions, further accelerating the deployment of the indigenous train collision avoidance system across the national rail network.

The approved projects involve the installation of Kavach safety infrastructure, including trackside equipment, signalling integration, communication systems, and associated technologies required for the operation of the automatic train protection system. The initiative is aimed at enhancing operational safety and reducing the risk of human error in train operations.

The contracts cover sections within the Northern Railway’s Ambala Division and the Western Railway’s Ahmedabad Division, both of which handle significant passenger and freight traffic. Once implemented, the projects will strengthen safety mechanisms on these routes and support the broader modernization of railway signalling systems.

Kavach, developed as an indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, is designed to automatically apply brakes when a locomotive pilot fails to respond to warnings or attempts to pass a signal at danger. The system also assists in maintaining safe train operations by continuously monitoring train movement and speed.

Indian Railways has been expanding the deployment of Kavach across high-density and high-utilisation routes as part of its long-term safety enhancement programme. The technology is considered a key component of the railway network’s modernization strategy and is expected to play a major role in improving operational reliability.

The newly approved ₹341 crore projects form part of the national rollout plan for Kavach and underline Indian Railways’ continued focus on strengthening safety infrastructure through advanced indigenous technologies. Once completed, the installations in Ambala and Ahmedabad will contribute to safer and more efficient train operations on some of the country’s busiest rail corridors.
