Indian Railways Approves ₹223 Crore for Kavach 4.0 Across 614.75 Route Kilometres

Indian Railways has approved ₹223 crore for the deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 across 614.75 route kilometres of the Varanasi Division of North Eastern Railway.

The approved project will extend Kavach 4.0 coverage to the identified balance sections of the division, strengthening the train protection infrastructure available for railway operations.

Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to enhance operational safety. The system helps prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), automatically applies brakes when required and monitors train movement to support safer train operations.

The provision of Kavach 4.0 across the identified sections will further strengthen train protection infrastructure in the Varanasi Division. The project is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing expansion of Kavach deployment across its network.

The latest approval covers 614.75 route kilometres at a total sanctioned cost of ₹223 crore. The work will be carried out across the remaining identified sections of the division where Kavach 4.0 is yet to be provided.

Kavach is designed to intervene when operational conditions require automatic braking, helping prevent trains from passing signals at danger and supporting controlled train movement.

The Varanasi Division forms part of North Eastern Railway’s network, and the latest approval will extend the availability of the indigenous train protection system across additional sections used for regular train operations.

The deployment is expected to strengthen railway safety infrastructure and support more reliable train operations across the division as Indian Railways continues to expand Kavach coverage on its network.
