Indian Railways Approves ₹175-Crore Electric Locomotive Homing Project at Raipur

Indian Railways has sanctioned a ₹175-crore infrastructure project to expand electric locomotive homing and maintenance facilities at Raipur under the South East Central Railway (SECR), reinforcing its commitment to modernising railway infrastructure and supporting the growing shift towards electric traction.

The project involves the development of additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at the High Horse Power (HHP) Diesel Shed in Raipur. Once completed, the upgraded facility will significantly enhance the railway zone’s capacity to accommodate, inspect and maintain electric locomotives, ensuring greater operational efficiency and improved fleet availability.

The investment is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to strengthen maintenance infrastructure in line with the rapid electrification of its rail network. As the number of electric locomotives continues to increase, enhanced servicing facilities have become essential to support reliable freight and passenger operations while reducing turnaround time for maintenance.

According to the Railways, the project will optimise the utilisation of existing infrastructure at the Raipur depot while creating capacity for future technological upgrades and the induction of additional electric locomotives. The initiative is expected to improve operational reliability and support the efficient movement of trains across the South East Central Railway network.

The approval reflects Indian Railways’ continued focus on developing world-class maintenance infrastructure as it advances towards a fully electrified network. Investments in locomotive homing facilities, signalling systems and modern maintenance practices are expected to enhance operational efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and strengthen the country’s rail-based transportation ecosystem.
