India is making significant strides toward fully electrifying its railway network, with 25 states and union territories now achieving 100 percent rail electrification in their respective jurisdictions. This progress underscores the nation’s push for energy efficiency, reduced carbon emissions and improved operational performance across the rail grid.

Five states and union territories are yet to achieve full electrification, but authorities say plans are in place to close the remaining gaps in the coming months. The expanded electrification umbrella reflects sustained efforts by rail and infrastructure authorities to prioritise cleaner traction systems and increase the share of electric locomotives in freight and passenger services.

Rail electrification not only reduces reliance on diesel fuel but also enhances locomotive efficiency and lowers operating costs benefits that have prompted the government to accelerate work across the national network. Over the past several years, electrification has been a key component of India’s rail modernisation vision, aligned with broader energy transition and climate targets.

Officials pointed out that states with full electrification are better positioned to handle increased rail traffic, improve train speeds and reduce transit times. Electric traction also enables smoother operations in high-density corridors and contributes to reducing the rail sector’s overall carbon footprint.

The electrification drive has been accompanied by infrastructure enhancements such as upgraded signalling, station improvements and investments in bridging critical capacity bottlenecks. Rail authorities have also stressed the importance of integrating renewable energy into traction power supply to further strengthen sustainability credentials.

Work continues in the remaining states to complete electrification of all routes and related infrastructure. With concerted project planning, statutory clearances, and contractor mobilisation, full coverage is expected to be achieved as these states complete pending works such as overhead wiring, substation commissioning and related civil works.

Railway experts said that achieving near-total electrification is a transformative milestone for India’s rail network, positioning it for enhanced economic competitiveness, reduced environmental impact and improved service delivery for both passengers and freight customers.
