The Hydrocarbon Sector Skill Council (HSSC) has trained more than 2.34 lakh professionals since its inception, playing a significant role in developing a skilled workforce for India’s evolving energy sector, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said.
Addressing the 10th Foundation Day celebrations of HSSC, the minister said the council has emerged as a key institution in equipping the workforce with industry-relevant skills as the country moves towards a cleaner, more diversified energy ecosystem.
Puri noted that India’s energy landscape is undergoing rapid transformation, with increasing emphasis on renewable energy, green hydrogen, biofuels, compressed biogas, sustainable aviation fuel and other emerging technologies. He said the changing energy mix requires a workforce capable of adapting to new technologies and industry requirements.
Highlighting HSSC’s contribution, the minister said the council has developed more than 140 Qualification Packs, aligned training programmes with industry needs and worked closely with stakeholders to improve employability across the hydrocarbon sector. He added that HSSC has also expanded its outreach through partnerships with educational institutions, training centres and industry organisations.
The minister emphasised that skill development will remain central to India’s energy transition, ensuring the availability of trained professionals to support the country’s long-term energy security and sustainability goals. He also expressed confidence that HSSC would continue to play a crucial role in building a future-ready workforce for the energy sector.
HSSC functions under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and focuses on skill development, certification and capacity building across the oil, gas and hydrocarbon industries.
