Hindustan Construction Company Limited (HCC) has secured a railway contract worth ₹577.89 crore from the Northeast Frontier Railway. The project has been awarded to the HCC–VCCL Joint Venture, in which HCC holds a 65 percent stake.
The scope of the contract includes the balance construction work of four key tunnels – Tunnel No. 9 (600 metres), Tunnel No. 11 (350 metres), Tunnel No. 13 (400 metres), and Tunnel No. 16 (600 metres) — along with associated cut-and-cover works. The project also involves extensive earthwork in embankment and cutting to establish the railway alignment, in addition to protection and ancillary works along the Piphema–Zubza section under the Dimapur–Kohima New Broad Gauge Line Project.
The Dimapur–Kohima rail line is considered strategically significant, forming part of Indian Railways’ broader initiative to strengthen connectivity in the Northeast region. The project is aimed at improving access to remote and hilly terrain, facilitating smoother passenger and freight movement, and supporting socio-economic development in Nagaland and neighbouring states.
With challenging geological conditions and complex terrain, tunnel construction in the region requires specialised engineering expertise and advanced execution capabilities. The award reinforces HCC’s established experience in executing large-scale infrastructure projects, particularly in difficult topographical environments.
The new contract is expected to contribute to regional development by enhancing rail infrastructure, reducing travel time and improving logistical efficiency in the Northeast. The project also aligns with ongoing national efforts to bridge connectivity gaps and accelerate infrastructure growth in strategically important regions of the country.
