Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals fuel a sharp surge in freight revenue — ₹12,608 crore in FY25!

Indian Railways’ Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) initiative continues to record strong momentum, with freight earnings touching ₹12,608.05 crore in FY25. The rapid rise in revenue reflects the growing shift of industries towards rail-based logistics since the GCT policy was rolled out in 2021.

Under this policy, 306 cargo terminals have been approved so far across the country, allowing development on both Railway and private land to encourage flexible, faster, and cost-efficient cargo handling. Of these, 118 terminals are already operational, offering a combined handling capacity of around 192 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Private sector participation has also been significant, contributing investments of nearly ₹8,600 crore.

Freight revenue from GCT-linked traffic has grown consistently over the past three financial years. Earnings increased from ₹2,901.86 crore in FY23 to ₹7,712.36 crore in FY24, before registering the latest jump to ₹12,608.05 crore in FY25, underscoring the network’s expanding utilisation and efficiency.

Maharashtra has been one of the active states in this expansion drive. Nine new terminals, including those in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, have been commissioned with total investments of ₹548.69 crore. Additionally, 91 projects worth ₹932.34 crore have been approved for developing modern goods and parcel handling facilities across the state.

The accelerated rollout of Gati Shakti cargo terminals is supporting quicker freight movement, reducing logistics costs for businesses, lowering carbon emissions, and strengthening India’s broader infrastructure and economic growth strategy.
