FedEx Express has announced a ₹2,500 crore investment to develop an automated cargo hub at the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, company officials said on Thursday. The move is expected to strengthen logistics infrastructure and support faster, more efficient freight operations in one of India’s fastest-growing aviation and trade corridors.

The planned facility will feature advanced automation technologies to streamline cargo handling, enhance throughput and improve operational efficiencies for domestic and international shipments. By integrating state-of-the-art systems, the cargo hub is aimed at expediting freight processing times and creating a high-capacity logistics node aligned with global standards.

Officials said the investment underscores FedEx’s commitment to expanding its footprint in India and modernising supply chain capabilities in support of rising demand for express, e-commerce and industrial freight services. The development is expected to attract business from a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, automotive and technology, as companies seek faster and more reliable logistics solutions.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport, positioned to serve as a major aviation gateway for the Mumbai metropolitan region, has been designed with dedicated cargo infrastructure and connectivity linkages that support multimodal transport integration. The new automated hub will leverage these capabilities to strengthen connectivity for import, export and domestic distribution activities.

Industry analysts said the investment reflects broader trends in the Indian logistics sector, where automation and digitalisation are increasingly viewed as essential to improving efficiency and competitiveness. By incorporating advanced cargo handling technologies, the facility is expected to reduce turnaround times, lower handling costs and support seamless freight movement across domestic and global supply chains.

FedEx said the project will be developed in phases, with implementation timelines to be aligned with the construction schedule of the airport’s cargo precinct. The company also noted that the hub is expected to generate employment opportunities across operations, technology, and supply chain services during both construction and operational phases.

Stakeholders in the aviation and logistics ecosystem welcomed the announcement, saying that the investment could further catalyse the development of Navi Mumbai International Airport as a key freight gateway and support India’s ambitions to enhance air cargo connectivity and infrastructure.
