Engineers India Limited (EIL) has secured a contract worth more than $450 million from the Dangote Group for a greenfield refinery and petrochemical project in Kenya.
Under the contract, EIL will provide Project Management Consultancy (PMC) and Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) consultancy services for the proposed project.
The greenfield refinery and petrochemical complex will have a planned processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day. The project is expected to strengthen fuel production capacity in East Africa, reduce dependence on petroleum imports and support regional energy security.
The facility will also have the potential to supply petroleum products to international markets, according to the company.
The latest contract further expands the existing association between EIL and the Dangote Group. The two companies had earlier worked together on the 650,000 barrels-per-day integrated refinery and petrochemical complex at Lekki Free Zone in Nigeria.
EIL has been involved in the Nigerian project as the EPCM/PMC services provider. The company’s international project portfolio also includes assignments across the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia.
The Kenya project adds another major refinery and petrochemical assignment to EIL’s international portfolio as the company continues to provide engineering and project management services for large-scale energy infrastructure projects.
The proposed refinery is planned as part of Dangote Group’s expansion in East Africa. Kenya is preparing to move the project towards construction, with the facility planned for Lamu and designed to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
For EIL, the contract builds on its experience in complex refinery and petrochemical projects and its established relationship with the Dangote Group. The company’s previous association with the group includes the Lekki refinery project in Nigeria, which has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.
The latest order strengthens EIL’s presence in the African energy market and adds a major greenfield refinery and petrochemical assignment to its growing international project portfolio.
