DP World Completes $200 Million Posorja Terminal Expansion in Ecuador

DP World has completed the expansion of its Posorja container terminal in Ecuador, taking the quay length to 800 metres as part of an investment programme worth approximately $200 million. The expansion will raise the terminal’s annual container-handling capacity to 1.4 million TEUs and strengthen its ability to accommodate some of the world’s largest container vessels.

The latest phase adds 100 metres to the quay, extending it from the 700 metres inaugurated in April this year. DP World has also added a new ship-to-shore crane with a 72-metre outreach and a lifting capacity of up to 65 tonnes. The crane is designed to handle vessels of up to 400 metres in length, including ships with capacities ranging from 20,000 to 24,000 TEUs.

Three additional hybrid rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes have also arrived at the terminal and are expected to enter service in early 2027 following commissioning. Once the new equipment becomes operational, the terminal will have seven ship-to-shore cranes and 18 yard cranes. The hybrid RTGs are expected to reduce diesel consumption by around 40% compared with conventional equipment.

The expansion programme also includes electric terminal vehicles, additional equipment for handling empty containers and an approximately 50% increase in power connections for refrigerated containers. These additions will support the handling of different cargo categories, particularly temperature-sensitive export shipments.

The latest investment takes the overall programme value to approximately $200 million, compared with the $190 million announced by DP World when the earlier phase was inaugurated in April. The Posorja terminal operates under a 50-year concession awarded to the company in 2016 and serves as an important gateway for Ecuador’s agricultural and refrigerated exports.
