The Union Cabinet has approved granting international status to Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu, a move aimed at strengthening global connectivity and boosting economic development in the region. The decision comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state, where several development initiatives are scheduled to be launched.
Madurai Airport, located in the historic temple city of Madurai, serves as a major gateway to the southern districts of Tamil Nadu and plays a significant role in supporting tourism, pilgrimage, and regional business travel. Upgrading the airport to international status is expected to enhance connectivity for travellers while facilitating trade and investment opportunities in the region.
The decision comes ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, where he is scheduled to launch several development initiatives and infrastructure projects.
Officials said improved international flight connectivity from Madurai will make it easier for tourists and pilgrims from overseas to visit major cultural and religious destinations in the region, including the renowned Meenakshi Amman Temple. The move is also expected to support exports, strengthen regional trade, and accelerate economic growth across southern Tamil Nadu.
The approval forms part of the government’s broader strategy to expand aviation infrastructure and improve connectivity in emerging cities across the country.
