The Union Cabinet has approved the Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A project, a new metro corridor connecting Koteshwar Road Metro Station with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, at an estimated cost of ₹2,169 crore. The project is aimed at providing direct metro connectivity to the airport and strengthening Ahmedabad’s urban transport network.
The approved corridor will be approximately 6 km long and will extend from the existing Koteshwar Road station to the airport. The route has been planned as an extension of the metro network to improve access to one of Gujarat’s busiest transportation hubs.
The airport corridor is proposed to include a combination of elevated and underground sections. The line will run on an elevated alignment from Koteshwar Road towards the airport area before transitioning underground near the airport terminal.
According to project plans prepared by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), the corridor will feature multiple stations along the route, including a dedicated airport station designed to provide seamless access for air travellers. The project is expected to integrate the airport more closely with Ahmedabad’s existing metro network and other public transport systems.
The approval comes as Ahmedabad continues to expand its metro infrastructure through a series of new corridors and extensions. The airport link has been under planning for several years and is considered a key component of the city’s long-term mobility strategy.
The project will be implemented by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation and is expected to improve connectivity between the airport, residential areas, commercial districts, and other parts of the city served by the metro network.
The Cabinet’s approval, the airport connectivity project moves into the implementation phase, adding another major infrastructure component to Ahmedabad’s expanding metro system.
