BMC Approves Second Phase of Kala Ghoda Precinct Development, Emphasis on Public Plaza and Pedestrian-Friendly Spaces

Planned pedestrian plaza and heritage buildings in Kala Ghoda, Mumbai during urban redevelopment phase
Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda precinct to get a new public plaza and upgraded walkways in BMC’s second-phase redevelopment plan.

Mumbai’s iconic Kala Ghoda precinct is set to undergo further transformation as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has cleared the second phase of its development plan. The upcoming phase will place strong emphasis on creating a central public plaza and enhancing pedestrian-friendly infrastructure to preserve the area’s cultural vibrancy while improving accessibility.

Officials said the project aims to integrate heritage aesthetics with modern urban design, ensuring smoother pedestrian movement and safer pathways across the precinct. The plan includes widening footpaths, improving street furniture, adding uniform signages, and decluttering traffic bottlenecks. Special focus will also be given to strengthening the visual appeal of the precinct, which houses several art galleries, historic buildings, and cultural hubs.

The first phase of the project had already upgraded streets and improved mobility in the precinct. With the new phase, the civic body aims to further position Kala Ghoda as a model cultural district that balances heritage conservation with contemporary urban planning.

Work on the second phase is expected to begin soon, with BMC coordinating with heritage experts, urban designers, and local stakeholders to ensure the precinct retains its distinct character while becoming more welcoming for visitors and residents alike.
