Bengaluru Six-Lane Tunnel at Hebbal Moves Closer to Reality with Four Bidders

Bengaluru’s proposed six-lane tunnel at Hebbal has progressed with four bidders shortlisted for DPR and execution, bringing the long-awaited traffic decongestion project closer to reality.
The proposed six-lane tunnel aims to ease congestion at Hebbal, one of Bengaluru’s busiest traffic nodes.

The proposed six-lane tunnel project at Hebbal in Bengaluru has taken a major step forward with four firms short-listed to bid for the detailed project report (DPR) and execution contract, bringing the long-pending infrastructure plan closer to implementation.

The initiative seeks to construct a six-lane tunnel on the Outer Ring Road at the Hebbal interchange, a critical junction that connects northern and eastern parts of Bengaluru and is frequently plagued by heavy traffic congestion. The tunnel is expected to provide uninterrupted movement for through traffic, bypassing surface bottlenecks and reducing travel time for commuters.

The four entities selected for the bidding process are now preparing technical and financial proposals for the project. Their submissions will help shape the detailed design, alignment, cost estimates and execution plan for the tunnel, which is envisioned to drastically improve traffic management and ease congestion on one of the city’s busiest corridors.

The six-lane tunnel at Hebbal has been in discussion for several years as part of efforts to modernise Bengaluru’s road network and address chronic traffic snarls. The project aims to decongest the Hebbal junction by allowing high-volume through traffic to pass beneath the current roundabout and surface intersections, enabling smoother connectivity between key arterial roads.

Officials associated with the project said that finalising the DPR and selecting an implementation partner will be crucial steps before the formal tendering and construction phases can begin. The tunnel design is expected to include safety features, lighting, ventilation and provisions for emergency services.

The development is being watched closely by commuters and urban planners alike, who see the project as a potential game-changer for easing traffic woes in Bengaluru. If executed as envisioned, the Hebbal tunnel could serve as a model for similar urban infrastructure interventions in other congested cities.
