The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has begun installation of steel barricades at select metro stations across the city as part of a broader initiative to improve commuter safety and station management, officials said on Monday.

The new steel barricades have been installed at strategic points within station premises, including entry and exit zones, platform areas and designated passenger movement corridors. The move aims to guide crowds more effectively, streamline passenger flows during peak hours and reduce the risk of accidents or overcrowding, particularly at major interchange stations.

BMRCL officials said the barricades are designed for durability and ease of maintenance, and have been positioned to provide clear segregation between passenger movement areas and operational zones. The enhancements are part of a wider safety and infrastructure upgrade programme that also includes improved signage, better lighting, clearer wayfinding systems and enhanced surveillance coverage.

The decision to introduce steel barricades follows feedback from commuters and urban transport planners seeking safer and more structured movement within high-traffic metro environments. City authorities noted that as ridership continues to grow, proactive measures are needed to maintain orderly station operations and minimize potential safety hazards.

The installations were rolled out in phases, beginning with busy metro stations where passenger footfall is highest. Officials said that additional stations will receive similar upgrades in the coming months, with the rollout guided by assessments of station design, crowd patterns and commuter behaviour.

Commuter groups welcomed the enhancements, saying that structured barriers help reduce confusion during busy hours and provide clearer direction, especially for new or occasional riders. They also noted that such measures could support better queue management during special events, festivals, or disruptions in train services.

The Bangalore Metro, one of India’s busiest rapid transit networks, has been progressively upgrading its infrastructure to enhance service quality and commuter comfort. The addition of steel barricades is expected to complement other initiatives aimed at improving station safety, accessibility and overall passenger experience.

Officials said periodic reviews will be conducted to assess the effectiveness of the barricades, with adjustments and additional safety interventions introduced based on commuter feedback and operational needs.
