Andhra Pradesh Approves New Palasa Airport Under UDAN Scheme

The Andhra Pradesh Government has approved the development of a new greenfield airport at Palasa in Srikakulam district under the Central Government’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, marking a significant step towards strengthening regional air connectivity in north coastal Andhra Pradesh. The proposed airport will be developed over approximately 500 acres in its first phase and is expected to improve connectivity while supporting trade, tourism and industrial growth in the region.

The project forms part of the state’s broader strategy to expand aviation infrastructure and improve access to underserved regions. The proposed airport is expected to serve the districts of Srikakulam and adjoining areas, reducing travel time for passengers and providing faster connectivity to major cities across the country. It is also expected to complement the ongoing development of Mulapeta Port and other infrastructure projects in north Andhra Pradesh, creating new opportunities for economic and logistics growth.

According to the proposal, the airport will be developed under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN), which aims to enhance air access to smaller cities by promoting affordable regional air travel and strengthening aviation infrastructure. The project is expected to improve passenger mobility while supporting sectors such as tourism, agriculture, fisheries, cashew exports and small-scale industries that contribute significantly to the local economy.

The state government has initiated the land acquisition process and other preparatory activities required for the project. Once operational, the airport is expected to attract investments, generate employment opportunities and accelerate socio-economic development across north coastal Andhra Pradesh. The facility is also likely to play a strategic role in enhancing multimodal connectivity by integrating air transport with the region’s expanding road, rail and port infrastructure.

The proposed airport at Palasa is among several new aviation infrastructure projects planned by Andhra Pradesh to improve regional connectivity and support long-term economic growth. By expanding the state’s airport network under the UDAN initiative, the government aims to make air travel more accessible while strengthening the region’s role as an emerging industrial and logistics hub.
