Amit Shah to Launch Land Port Management System for Smarter Border Operations

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to launch the Land Port Management System (LPMS) on June 9, marking a significant step towards the digital transformation of India’s border infrastructure and cross-border trade operations. The initiative is aimed at creating a technology-driven ecosystem for cargo and passenger movement across the country’s land ports.

The LPMS has been developed as a unified digital platform that will integrate operations across India’s land ports, enabling real-time exchange of logistics and regulatory information among various stakeholders. The system seeks to bring land ports on par with the digital infrastructure already operational at airports and seaports.

A key feature of the platform is the introduction of end-to-end digital workflows for cargo and passenger processing. These include slot booking, online payments, cargo tracking, documentation management, and single-window clearances, reducing dependence on manual processes and improving operational efficiency.

The platform has been integrated with major national digital systems, including ICEGATE, ULIP, and the motor vehicle ecosystem, enabling seamless coordination between customs authorities, transport operators, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders involved in border operations.

Officials said the LPMS is expected to improve transparency, reduce processing delays, strengthen security, and facilitate smoother movement of goods and passengers through India’s international land borders. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader vision of developing technology-enabled “smart borders” that support both trade facilitation and national security objectives.

During the event, Shah will also inaugurate newly developed stakeholder accommodation facilities at the Dawki Land Port in Meghalaya and the Srimantapur Land Port in Tripura. These facilities have been created to enhance support infrastructure for border personnel and other stakeholders operating at the land ports.

The Land Ports Authority of India currently manages 15 land ports across India’s borders with Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Pakistan. The launch of LPMS is expected to further strengthen connectivity, trade facilitation, and operational efficiency at these strategically important gateways.

The rollout of the new system represents another step in India’s efforts to modernise border infrastructure through digital technologies, while supporting the broader goals of improved logistics efficiency, regional connectivity, and economic growth.
