Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurates and e-inaugurates ₹330 crore worth of urban development projects in Ahmedabad, including the Western Trunk Main Line drainage project benefiting nearly 15 lakh residents.

Ahmedabad witnessed a major development push on Sunday as Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurated and e-inaugurated a series of infrastructure projects worth ₹330 crore across the city. The programme, organised by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), was attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, senior officials, and local residents.

A central highlight of the event was the formal inauguration of the Western Trunk Main Line Project, a long-awaited drainage and wastewater management initiative that is expected to bring lasting relief to large parts of western and south-western Ahmedabad. As part of this project, reinforced concrete pipelines with diameters ranging from 1,200 mm to 1,800 mm have been laid at an estimated cost of around ₹400 crore, addressing longstanding issues of sewage overflow and infrastructure strain. This work is set to benefit nearly 15 lakh residents living in areas including Gota, Chandlodia, Science City, South Bopal, Bhadaj, Hebatpur, Thaltej, Bopal-Ghuma, Bodakdev, Vejalpur, Sarkhej, Maktampura, Shantipura, Sanathal and neighbouring localities.

During the ceremony, Shah also unveiled an idol of Lord Ganesh, adding cultural significance to the event. In a historic gesture, he distributed land ownership certificates (sanads) to rehabilitated residents of Nava Vanzar village, many of whom have awaited formal property rights for decades. Speaking on the occasion, Shah noted that while the number of beneficiaries may seem modest in a large city like Ahmedabad, the day represents a deeply emotional and transformative milestone for those families.

Shah emphasised that the development reflects a sustained focus on civic infrastructure and public welfare, rooted in long-term planning and utilisation of central schemes aimed at improving urban living standards. He highlighted how initiatives under national urban development programmes have been mobilised to enhance quality of life and resolve civic problems that have persisted for years.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel echoed the sentiment, stating that 2025 has been a year of strong development momentum for Ahmedabad, with multiple infrastructure projects underway to meet the city’s growing needs. He said efforts are focused on ensuring that essential services such as housing, sanitation, and basic utilities remain accessible and reliable for all citizens.

The inauguration marks a significant step in Ahmedabad’s ongoing urban transformation, alongside other major civic works that aim to strengthen infrastructure, enhance resilience against environmental challenges, and improve overall quality of life across the city.
