ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has supplied the entire requirement of special steel for INS Malvan, the Indian Navy’s latest Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), marking another milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing. The company provided the specialised steel under the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, supporting domestic production of advanced naval platforms.
INS Malvan is the eighth vessel in a series of 16 Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts being built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd. for the Indian Navy. The vessel has been designed for coastal anti-submarine operations, low-intensity maritime missions, underwater surveillance, search and rescue operations, and mine-laying activities, enhancing India’s coastal defence capabilities.
The specialised steel supplied by AM/NS India has been developed to meet the stringent quality, strength and durability standards required for naval applications. By manufacturing these critical grades domestically, the company has contributed to reducing dependence on imported defence materials while strengthening India’s strategic manufacturing capabilities.
The achievement further reinforces AM/NS India’s growing role in supplying advanced steel solutions for defence, infrastructure and engineering sectors. As India continues to expand indigenous defence production, the development of specialised domestic steel capabilities is expected to play a crucial role in supporting future naval and strategic programmes while enhancing self-reliance in critical defence supply chains.
